Week 5 Blogpost
As what has been talked in the video"Connected but alone"this week, there is an phenomenon that people are alone together. There are some pictures showing that all the people in the same physical place are looking at their own mobile devices without starting a conversation with each other close to them. As a result, people would rather text than talk. By communicating online, we can build our different images even though it is not the same as we behave in the real-life. And users can delicately polish their language and try their best to deliver the message in an appropriate way. But this is not the exact picture in the real world as people will have their facial expression, body language and eye contact, etc.

It reminds of the question"Does text-based communication influences self-esteem more than face-to-face communication? "This is an important question that self-esteem is a determinant of mental and physical health. I agree with that people often disclose more in text-based communication than in the real life especially for the low self-esteem person. People want to build a more positive images to gain the support online. However, can people just stay in the virtual world? The answer is no for sure. You know exactly who you are. Just to imagine that you have a sharp skill of marketing and branding yourself in the resume haunting for the job, and you get the chance for interview. However you know that you over-polish it and you will be more stressful to showcase the real yourself in front of the employers. "I share therefore I am" is not exactly the profound way of building your self-esteem and even worse it will ruin our self-esteem. Self-esteem should not only come from the feedbacks of others but it should be a self-evaluation. Narcissism people are not people who are over-confident, but in opposite, they are of low-self esteem building up their images depending on the thumbs up from other people.

Hi Boen,
ReplyDeleteThat video and her corresponding article in Forbes were really thought provoking for me as well. She makes some really great points about how social media as a technology preys on some of the social factors that make us most vulnerable. I think you've touched upon this phenomenon well in your post and elevated it to where there is a certain loop around participation increasing self-esteem and then subsequently decreasing it when we fail to live up to our own expectations derived from that build up. I wonder if there's some constructive way to highlight that much of this is due to a general lack within the offline world of connection and people really listening to each other? Or is social media is going to face a shift where it no longer is able to deliver the same level of esteem raising and people begin to turn again outward.
I think one of the most telling things is that, despite what we've been reading about how these media can make us feel like we're getting esteem boosts, nothing makes us feel the same as when a similar action occurs in the outside world.
See you in class later!
